Public Health England (PHE) exist to protect and improve the nation's health and wellbeing, and reduce health inequalities. PHE are an executive agency of the Department of Health and Social Care, and a distinct organisation with operational autonomy. We provide government, local government, the NHS, Parliament, industry and the public with evidence-based professional, scientific expertise and support.

PHE employ 5,500 staff and was established to bring together public health specialists from more than 70 organisations into a single public health service.

The Challenge

PHE were facing challenging market conditions when recruiting specialist ICT staff across the UK. Due to the preferred recruitment advertising methods of their organisation, PHE weren’t attracting the type of specialists they needed within their ICT team or it was taking a long time to recruit. In particular, PHE were looking for a more diverse workforce and found female candidates were not seeing or applying to their advertised jobs.

The Solution

Meta proposed PHE host an event on Women in Technology. We brought together a network of female technology and IT professionals from both public and private sectors - in order to pipeline candidates for PHE’s current and future recruitment drives.

As part of the event we;

  • Produced videos based in several PHE offices to showcase the benefits of working at PHE and the exciting technologies the team work on

  • Managed pre and post event marketing, including press releases, event invites, surveys and job advertisements

  • Procured expert speakers on Technology from NHS Business Services and The Adecco Group

  • Created candidate packs in order to educate applicants on PHE’s role in the community and the ICT team.

With pre and post event marketing we successfully enhanced PHE’s employer brand, increased the number of applicants to their live roles and cemented their commitment to diversity and equal opportunities.

Sam Lloyd, Deputy Director at Public Health England comments,

”Our commitment to Diversity and Inclusion really shone through at this successful event. Over 50 potential candidates attended with excellent feedback.

The videos which were produced are great and are very useful for us in other contexts in order to further educate on what Public Health England do as an organisation. The project was a huge success”
